“Lost” by Linkin Park, lyrics & meaning

“Lost” is a song from the Meteora recording sessions that was officially released on February 10th, 2023

Lost Lyrics and their meaning

Just a scar somewhere down inside of me
Something I can not repair
Even though it will always be
I pretend it isn’t there
I’m trapped in yesterday
Where the pain is all I know

A part of him wishes he could break free from his pain and flourish as a new person one day. But it appears like an impossible goal to achieve: when the singer is alone, he is unavoidably buried in his pain and begins to live “behind his own perplexity.” The lyrics of Lost are a faithful representation of the feelings of a man suffering from depression.

’m lost in these memories
Living behind my own illusion
Lost all my dignity
Living inside my own confusion

There are some veiled references to his past scars throughout his life: Chester was severely effected by his parents’ divorce when he was 11 years old, and he was ridiculed at school for a long period. He speaks of the “injury he had endured” and his constant hope that those feelings will fade away one day. However, they appear to be stuck with him indefinitely.

But I’m tired, I will always be afraid
Of the damage I’ve received
Broken promises they made
And how blindly I believed

Childhood scars might become a burden from which we will never recover. If you are not adequately supported when growing up during those vulnerable years, your fragility takes over and makes it tough to believe that you can move on from the suffering you have experienced. This is what happened to Chester Bennington: faced with circumstances too great for his age, he became engulfed in addictions and loneliness. Until the day he committed suicide on July 20, 2017. His legacy, though, lives on, and many followers can still identify to the words he wrote. Even today, as the lyrics of Lost demonstrate.

I try to keep this pain inside
But I will never be alright
I’m lost
